"You boys have soul" -Uriel Jones
Trilogy Hangs out with Uriel Jones the Funk Brothers' drummer
The Funk Brothers have recorded more #1 Hits than The Beatles or Elvis. You've heard Uriel on songs including the Temptations' "Ain't to Proud to Beg"
Since recorded history we have revered and idolized legends. They are written about because they are something extraordinary amongst us that just can’t be overlooked.
A few days ago, Trilogy played yet another summer festival that turned into a night we won’t soon forget. After our first set, a festival representative came to the stage and asked me if we could take a few moments to speak with Uriel Jones. He was seated a few tables from the stage, but looked like any other person having a cold beer on a perfect night listening to music. I had to ask her twice if she was referring to Uriel Jones of Motown’s Funk Brothers and she told me it was really him and he loved the band. Still in somewhat of a shocked state, I introduced myself and thanked him. I thanked him for, “My Girl”, “I Can’t Help Myself”, “What Becomes of the Broken Hearted”, “Dancin in the Streets” and all the hundreds of Motown hits that I have listened to since the 60’s. Uriel drummed on 90% of Motown’s biggest hits and played with my biggest inspiration for all these years, James Jamerson. In my opinion, Uriel and James were “Motown”. When you hear a Motown song, you hear a low rounded melodic bass line and a beat that perfectly complimented the song. Keep in mind they did this before the vocals were recorded and the final product completed. A lot of Motown critics believe that these foundation tracks inspired the dynamic performance of the singers and this is how legends are made.
Uriel told me he thought the group was great. He especially liked that everybody sang and it seemed everybody seemed to play everything. He complimented the overall sound quality and said “You boys got soul”. In my 40 plus years of playing this is a compliment I will never forget. When you get a compliment like that from Uriel Jones well.... we were blown away. He stayed for all three sets.
After the show, I had a chance to clear my head and reflect the night. I had a thousand questions I would have liked to ask, but the only thing that came out was “Thank You”. I think he understood.
